This project revolves around assisting people with hypertension in understanding their condition better and effectively managing it, aiming to prevent heart-related severe health problems. Through the provision of helpful resources and support, our goal is to alleviate their stress and empower them to take control of their well-being.

1 / Objective

To tackle these issues, our project seeks to accomplish four vital tasks:

Education

Educating young individuals about hypertension in order to prevent them from developing high blood pressure in the future.

Empowerment

Empowering individuals to manage their blood pressure better: By raising awareness with accessible information and tools, we aim to boost their confidence in managing their condition more effectively.

Change

Facilitating necessary lifestyle changes: We aim to guide them through adopting a healthier lifestyle by simplifying the steps required

Prevention

Preventing cardiovascular diseases: Ultimately, our objective is to reduce the risk of heart-related ailments by assisting individuals in maintaining optimal blood pressure levels.

2 / Background Information

Hypertension (high blood pressure) is when the pressure in your blood vessels is too high. Many factors, such as unhealthy lifestyle choices, certain health conditions such as obesity and diabetes, stress, age and genetics, can cause hypertension. In most cases, hypertension can be managed; if it is not, it can lead to severe damage to the human body. Hypertension can hurt your organs and arteries, leading to heart disease, heart attacks, and heart failure. High blood pressure is called the “silent killer” because it usually has no warning signs or symptoms, and many people do not know they have it.

According to the 2017-2018 Canadian Chronic Disease Surveillance System (CCDSS) data, 25% of Canadian adults aged 20 years and older were living with diagnosed hypertension. More people are being diagnosed at an earlier age, and many people remain undiagnosed. According to a Heart & Stroke survey, health professionals are worried that people do not understand the condition and its associated risks since high blood pressure is the number one risk factor for heart disease. Heart & Stroke’s surveys also revealed that the inability to access health care during the pandemic has impacted blood pressure, putting more people at risk.

3 / Project Framing

The core challenges/pain points lie in the emotional distress individuals with high blood pressure often experience. The confusion and anxiety surrounding their health can be overwhelming and contribute to their blood pressure.

The specific challenges they face include three main areas:

  • Understanding their health condition (high blood pressure): Many people have difficulty understanding all the details of their condition.

  • Following recommended lifestyle changes (diet, exercise, and medication management): Implementing the prescribed lifestyle adjustments can be challenging and demanding for many individuals.

  • Understanding conflicting health advice: People often need help deciding what to believe when presented with various contradictory health advice.

Target audience: Hypertensive individuals, At-risk patients, younger at-risk individuals, health-limited individuals

The purpose of this concept is to create an environment that is both engaging and educational. In this environment, participants will not only be faced with interpreting clues to help them get out of the room, but they will also be required to understand the mysterious nature of hypertension.

Our mission is to empower individuals with fundamental knowledge, encourage the adoption of healthier lifestyle behaviours, and ultimately make a meaningful contribution toward cultivating a healthier and more well-informed community through the integration of entertainment and health education. This will be accomplished by bringing the two together. By getting people to engage with puzzles as part of this initiative, we hope to bring about fundamental changes in an individual's life in a step-by-step and methodical manner.

The Silent Killer Experience not only aims to educate participants about hypertension but also to inspire them by immersing them in an experience that helps them empathize with the challenges of living with high blood pressure or heart disease, ultimately motivating them to take proactive steps towards a healthier lifestyle.
